Software Architecture Presentations At InfoQ
InfoQ is a great site for the practicing programmer and has some very interesting presentations available for free. Here are my current faves.
I'm into CMSs and architecture so these two on the Guardian web site were really interesting:
- The evolving Guardian.co.uk architecture by Mathew Wall
- Rebuilding guardian.co.uk With DDD by Phil Wills (DDD = Domain Driven Design)
You can also hear a podcast about the Guardian site which gets into a bit more detail on the platform and how it was arrived at from Software Engineering Radio with Mathew Wall and Erik DoernenBurg (Erik's from Thoughtworks).

Early Eightes BBC Computer Programmes
When I was a lad the closet I got to a computer was watching them on TV. The BBC was (and still is) on the forefront of new technology and rightly so! Two programmes that inspired a lot of UK computer talent were "The Computer Programme" and "Micro Live". See two clips embedded below from YouTube. Oh, the way we wore.

Apple Updates iTunes To Version 9 - Still Crap
Is iTunes the worst piece of software in the world today? Yes!
When Apple released iTunes 8 I dutifully upgraded... and it crashed. iTunes 9 (released 9/9/9 oh the irony) crashes. It's something to do with "errors" in my library. I say "errors" in quotes because this is a library created and managed by the very apps that are crashing when using it. So it's not really "errors" in my library - it's errors in iCrapTunes. iTunes is a sorry sack of cobbled together old code that needs completely throwing away and writing again from the ground up.

Shanghai 3D Map

This is a very cool 3D map of Shanghai. That's our office in the middle. Lots of other cities in China are available.

Vaio X Testing Video

Netbooknews have posted a video (embedded below from YouTube) of a Vaio X being worked over by machines in the name of quality testing. It's hypnotic.

If Architects Had To Work Like Web Designers
Please design and build me a house. I am not quite sure of what I need, so you should use your discretion... When you bring the blueprints to me, I will make the final decision of what I want. Also, bring me the cost breakdown for each configuration so that I can arbitrarily pick one.
So begins a piece entitled "If Architects Had to Work Like Web Designers" Sadly it's very true to life.

Gentoo Not Upgrading To Python 2.6
Gentoo recently switched to make python 2.6 the default python. This means that mod_python and mod_wsgi will be re-compiled against 2.6. Which means that any python modules you're using with Apache will also need to be re-compiled against the new version or you'll get version mis-match errors. If you'd rather not go through all that work you can tell portage not to upgrade with the following line in /etc/portage/package.mask:
> python-2.6
That says mask Python versions greater than 2.6. OK back to work.

A Tour Of Kingston's China USB Flash Drive Factory
netbooknews.com has a video tour of Kingston's China factory where they make USB flash drives (embedded below from YouTube). They are very lucky to get this tour. Factories usually do not allow visitors let alone cameras. It features the phrases "ship shooter" and "icy mounter". Marvellous stuff for your geek.
